Father* | John Bailey6 b. 29 Nov 1753, d. 12 Apr 1824 |
Mother* | Magdalane Coutant6 b. 5 Mar 1755, d. 8 Jul 1845 |
Relationship | 3rd great-grandfather of Howard Louis Bailey |
Charts | Howard Louis Bailey Family Tree |
Last Edited | 23 Oct 2018 |
Name Variation | Nathaniel Bailey was possibly also known as Nathaniel Belly.2 |
Birth* | He was born between 1781 and 1783 at New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York. Some digits on Nathaniel's tombstone are now corroded, and it is unclear if it says 61, 64, or 67 years old at death. The Ulster County Archives gives his age at death as 67, resulting in a birth year of c1781, but Old Gravestones of Ulster County (Riverside Cemetery, Marlborough), written by William J. Poucher in 1931 when the stones were not as worn, reported the engraving as May 11, 1848, age 64-7-27, resulting in a birthdate of 14 Sept 1783.1,7,8,9,4,10 |
Note | Donna Beers' history "Nicholas, John, & Elias Bailey of New York" gives Nathaniel's parents as John Bailey (also buried in Marlborough) and Magdalane Coutant. A/o March 2007, one IGI record shows a marriage between Magdalene Coutant and John Bally in in 1777 Marlborough, Ulster County, both said to be "of Marlborough." |
Note* | He was probably the person listed on Road District # 2, at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, 1 April 1800.11 |
Marriage* | He married Harriett Having say 1809.1,3,12 |
Birth of Son | His son Bernard Bailey was born in 1810 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.13,14,15 |
Notes* | He was a wagon maker with several employees and apprentices.3 |
Religion* | He was probably the person shown on the first bench of ruling elders of Marlborough Presbyterian Church, Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, 1810.16 |
Census1810FedUS* | He appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, with a household listed as three free white males (under 10 = 1, 10-15 = 1, 26-44 = 1) and two free white females (under 10 = 1, 16-25 = 1. The adults would have been Nathaniel himself and probably Harriet, his wife. I have not identified the children, the eldest of whom was probably too old too have been one of their children.17 |
Birth of Daughter | His daughter Louisa Bailey was born on 15 December 1812 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.14,13,18,19,20,21,22,23 |
Birth of Daughter | His daughter Laura Bailey was born say 1816. |
Birth of Son | His son Anthony W. Bailey was born in 1818 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.24,25,26,27,28,29,7,30 |
Note | He was probably the person shown as Nathaniel Belly on road district 12 in Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, in 1818.2 |
Census1820FedUS* | He may have appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York. The hand-written census page appears to have left out some columns, so an accounting of who was enumerated with him is not possible. The person listed immediately before him is Nicholas Bailey.31 |
Birth of Daughter | His daughter Philetta I. Bailey was born on 1 June 1821 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.14,13,18,19,20,21,8,32,33 |
Birth of Son | His son James W. Bailey was born on 29 October 1823 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.34,35,36,37,38,39,40,5 |
Will* | He left a will dated 27 March 1828. The executors were his son Bernard Bailey and friend John W. Wygant, and the witnesses were Samuel H. _agger [illegible] & Samuel P. Halsey.3 |
Birth of Son | His son Nathaniel Bailey was born circa 1829 at New York.41,42,43 |
Census1830FedUS* | He appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Marlborough, Ulster County, New York, with a household listed as five free white males (one under age 5, probably Nathaniel Bailey, one age 5-9, probably James W. Bailey, one age 10-14, probably Anthony W. Bailey, one age 20-29, probably Bernard Bailey and one age 40-50, which would have been Nathaniel himself) and four free white females (one age 5-9, probably Philetta I. Bailey, one age 15-19, probably Louisa Bailey, one age 20-29, whose identity is discussed below, and one age 40-49 who would have been Nathaniel's wife, Harriett Having). The unidentifed female may have been Nathaniel and Harriets' purported daughter Laura or some other relative or friend living with them.44 |
Note | He is probably the Nathaniel Belly shown on the poll list for an election held from the November 3-6, 1834 at Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.45 |
Note | Either he or his son Nathaniel was shown in 1840 on road district #2 in Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.46 |
Census1840FedUS* | He may not have been enumerated in 1840 in Marlborough, Ulster County, NY. There is only one Nathaniel Baily, age 20-30. |

Occupation* | He was a wheelright in May 1848.4 |

Burial* | He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, Marlborough, Ulster County, New York.9,10 |
Will | His will was proved 27 November 1848.3,47 |
