Census1910FedUS* | She and Nathaniel Irving Bailey appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, at 100 Oakland Avenue, enumerated 20 April 1910. Their children Ida Nathalie, Mary, Margaret and Irving N. were listed as living with them. Although there is little doubt this is the correct family, many of the details given in the enumeration appear to be inaccurate. In particular, while it was reported in 1900 that Marion had given birth to five children, all living at that time, in 1910 it was reported that she had given birth to eleven children, five of whom were still living. This seems unlikely, although there is a mention in Bailey family notes that there may have been a son William for whom I have found no evidence.4,14 |

Birth* | She was born circa 1867 at Key East, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Key East was an early name for Avon-By-the Sea, which wasn't formally incorporated until 1900. All evidence of Maggie's birth date and birthplace come from non-contemporaneous records, such as the marriage certificate issued for her and William Parmalee Bailey and various census records. Her parents were living in Ocean Township, Monmouth County, NJ in 1860 and the family was living in Manhattan in 1870, with her next oldest sibling shown born in NJ and her younger sibling in NY. I've been unable to find birth or baptism records for Maggie in either place. Her birth was given in the 1900 census has having been in Feb., 1868. Her marrriage certificate to William Bailey stated that she would be 20 on her next birthday after 23 Jan 1887, which would agree. Family history notes state that her birtday was 22 Sept., 1867.7,4,5,8,13,1,14,9,15,11 |

Note | Maggie Martin Bailey disappeared from the Bailey family records in the late 1890s. Her son Howard, who started research into our Bailey family tree, did not mention in his surviving writing what happened to his mother. She seems to have cut off all contact with her children by William Bailey, and Howard and Clarence were placed in an orphanage until after William remarried in 1899. The assumption had been that Maggie had died, although a death certificate was never found. In 2018, I was contacted about an Ancestry DNA match with a family from Washington State, and it seems our Maggie had not died but had remarried, although no marriage certificate has been found in Manhattan, NY, where the couple was living at the time of the 1900 census. According to the descendents of her second marriage she was extremely secretive about her past, variously giving her maiden name as either Tucker (her mother's maiden name) or Martin (her own). She did state, however, that she'd been born in NJ, which is what most sources give as her birthplace. Maggie was inconsistent in her census answers but insisted on all of them from 1900 onward that she had been married only once, at the age of 16, and that she had only one child, Gertrude. Peggy Bailey Blackburn, her granddaughter and also a family historian, tried to find relatives that might have information about what happened to her, adding that she had heard there was a scandal of some kind surrounding Maggie. There is no known reason for the end of her marriage to William Bailey or for her abandoning her children. William died in 1906 of complications of alcoholism, which might or might not have played a factor. Or Maggie may have simply run off with Edward Bell, her second husband. |
