John and Mary are credited with 7 children: John, Peter, Sarah, Esther, Abigail, Thomas, and Mary. They were Quakers who were persecuted by the Puritans in New England and moved with Lady Deborah Moody to New Amsterdam about 1643, after which they helped her found the town of Gravesend on Long Island. In 1662 they were arrested by the Dutch for being members of the "abominable sect" [Quakerism], imprisoned in Fort Amsterdam, and then sentenced to banishment from the province. They apparently managed to remain in Gravesend, however, and they are both buried there.^1,5

On 2 November 1692 John Tucker was named as one of those bounding property that was confirmed to Gavine Drummond Poplar Swamp Brook, Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey.⁵

Moved*

Sometime after their son Joseph's birth, John and Ruth moved to Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Their children James, John and Joseph were probably with them. Daughter Elizabeth had died in infancy.⁴

He was mentioned in paperwork involving the estate of Abraham Tucker on 10 January 1710.¹⁰

Residence

He lived on 22 December 1720 at Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹⁵

On 2 April 1725, John was among a group of Quakers fined for refusing to pay tithes. Anna Miner quotes Quakers in American Colonies, Book 1, Chapter VII "New Type of Social Religion", page 153: He had taken from him in the form of fines one horse which sold for £10. 10s, and one heifer which sold for £2. 10s; demand was for £7. 15s, 4d.⁴

His son John Tucker died on 14 June 1730 at age 36.^2,16,4

He left a will dated after 2 September 1751 at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.¹⁸

Religion*

He was a Quaker and served as minister, clerk and keeper of the records of the meetings.⁴
