Death*

On 31 January 1904, Phillip Charles Thebo died suddenly at his home at Fort Edward, Washington County, New York, at age 68. He was attended by a Dr. Mott, and cause of death was given as acute indigestion.^14,13,9

Obituary

His obituary was published on 2 February 1904 at The Morning Star, Glens Falls, Warren County, New York, and read, Philip Charles Thebo died at his home, corner of Broadway and Bridge street, at 11:45 o'clock Sunday night, aged sixty-eight years. Mr. Thebo, although a sufferer frmn rheumatism for nearly forty years, did not complain of being ill until half an hour previous to his death. He spent the evening wtih friends, most of the time at the rooms of the Fort Edward club. He too luncheon at the restaurant of his son, George W. Thebo, at 10:30 o'clock, and went across the street to his store. There he was taken wtih a pain in the arms. He went directly to his living aparttments in the same building and retired. Dr. Mott was called shortly after, and Mr. Thebo passed away whle conversing with the physician. Acute indigestion was given as the cause of death.

Mr. Thebo moved to Fort Edward from New York city in 1863 and opened a fruit and oyster store at the corner of Broadway and Bridge street. In 1900 he built the present brick structure on the site. Shortly after opening this store it was leased for two years to Crawford Brothers, composed of Theodore, James, Andrew and William John Crawford, and Mr. Thebo moved to Glen Falls, where, under the style of Thebo and Crane, Andrew Crane bneing his partner, he conducted a fruit store. Ar the expiration of the lease he again took pssession of the store here. He did a large retail and wholesale business in groceries, oysters, fruit and fish, and, in addition, carried a line of crockery.

In politics the deceased was a staunch Democrat. A primary without Mr. Thebo, even though he was troubled with rheumatism, was a rarity. He served six years as village trustee, and during his incumbency the water system was established. He was also treasurer of the water commission, and took an active interest in the project.

In social circles Mr. Thebo was a notable figure. He was always happy and companionable, and was rarely absent from the nightly gatherings of congenial spirits at the Fort Edward club. His death is the fifth in the membership of that organization, and three of the number died suddenly. Mr. Thebo led an exemplary life, and his industry, persistency and integrity brought him a good measure of success.

Mr. Thebo is survived by six children, George W., Philip C. Jr., William H., Fenwick M. of Watrow, Wash; Benjamin Franklin and Anna May. Mr. Thebo is also survivied by a sister, Mrs. Calista True, of Ashland, Ore. At the time of his death he was citizen member of the board of health.

The funeral will be held at two o'clock Wednesday afteroon from St. James Episcopal church and will be in charge of Fort Edward lodge, F. and A. M. The Rev. Ernest (?) Melville will officiate at the church, and M. W. O. O. Niles will direct the Masonic services at the grave.¹⁴

Married in 1862, in New York city, to Mary Henrietta Chitty, daughter of Charles and Mary Chitty, of Quebec, P.Q. [sic - this location is incorrect; the author may have been thinking of Mary Wescott Thebo, wife of Benjamin]. Seven children, six surviving - George W., b. February 22, 1865; Philip C., Jr., b. March 28, 1869; William H., b. June 17, 1872; Fenwick M., b. May 28, 1875, Benjamin Franklin, b. January 28, 1877, and Anna May, b. June 22, 1887. Mr. Thebo's early life was spent in New York city, where he was engaged in the fruit and oyster business, which business, in connection with groceries and provisions, he has followed in the village of Fort Edward for many years; has at different times been elected as trustee of the village of Fort Edward; is a member of the Fort Edward Club, Fort Edward Lodge, 267, F. & A. M., Ancient Order of United Workmen, an honorary member of the Satterlee and Durkee Hose companies; St. James' Episcopal church, and has served as one of its vestrymen; is a Democrat in politics. He was an officer of the Home Guard, a military company, oprganized in 1864; and was treasurer of the board of water commissioners of the village of Fort Edward, at the time the municipal water works system was organized.^7,6

He and Mary Henrietta Chitty apparently had 8 children, 6 of whom were still alive in 1900. In 1910 she gave the total as 8 with 5 living. I have found only seven. Her obituary states seven, with 4 living, in 1941 children.^6,13

George W. Thebo, 78, long proprietor of a general store in Fort Edward, died Friday night while visiting his son, Walter, at Hudson. Mr. Thebo was a member of Fort Edward Lodge 267, F. and A.M; Fort Edward Chapter 171, R.A.M; Calvart Commandery, K.T., of Hudson Falls; Oriental Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Troy; the Royal Arcanum and the Satterlee Hose Company of Fort Edward.

Surviving besides his son Water are a daughter, Mrs. John J. Dittman, Fort Edward; a sister, Mrs. Anna Wright, of Fort Edward, and two brothers, Charles and Frank Thebo of Fort Edward. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm. today from the home of Mrs. Dittman in Fort Edward and later from the St. James Episcopal Church, Fort Edward. Interment will be in Union Cmetery, Fort Edward.²⁸

The death of George W. Thebo, for many years a prominent and highly respected resident and business man of this village, occurred last Friday at the home of his son, Walter P. Thebo, in Hudson Falls, following a loing illness. The body was brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. John J. Dittman. Funeral services were held at St. James' Episcopal church here Monday afternoon at 2:30, with Rev. Hugh Hooper officiating. Interment was in Union cemetery.

Mr. Thebo, who was 78 years of age, for mnay years conducted a confectionary store here. He was prominent in business and fraternal organizations, and was a member of Fort Edward lodge, F. and A. M., Fort Edward chapter, R.A.M; Calvary commandery, K.T., of Hudson Falls; Oriental Temple, Mystic shrine, Troy, the Royal Arcanum, and the Shaterlee Hose company.

Besides his son and daughter, Mr. Thebo is survivied by a sister, Mrs. Anna Wright, and two brothers, Charkes and Frank Thebo, of Fort Edward.¹⁵

While in a state of despondency due, it is said, to too close application to business, William H. Thebo, one of the best known residents of Fort Edward
committed suicide Saturday afternoon by hanging in his barn in that village. His lifeless body was discovered by his brother, Frank Thebo.

Thebo was associated with his brothers in the Broadway grocery business conducted under the firm name of M. H. Thebo. For some time he had been laboring unusually hard and at times acted strangely. His mother and brothers, it is said, did all in their power to divert his mind from the business, but during the Saturday afternoon rush In the store he left the building presumably for a short walk, as was his custom. This was shortly after 3 o'clock and it was the last time members of the family saw him alive.

Shortly after 6 o'clock his brother, Frank Thebo, went into the loft of the barn to throw hay down to a horse. In the dark he collided with an object. He hurried down to the store and summoned his brother. A lantern was secured and they returned to the barn loft where they found the cold and lifeless body of their brother .suspended by a rope from, a rafter and "several empty lard tubs near his feet". The body was "cut down and Coroner Stlllman gave permission for its removal to the young man's home.

Mr. Thebo was a highly respected young man and his close confinement to business at all times had, it is understood, impaired his health, and brought him to the state of mind which prompted him to end his life. Besides his mother, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Wright of Warrensburg, and four brothers, George W., P. C. and B. F. Thebo of Fort Edward and Fenwick Thebo of Phoenix, Idaho. He was a member of the Fort Edward club and an honorary member of the Satterlee Hose company.¹²

Obituary

His obituary was published on 12 November 1915 in the Granville Sentinel, Granville, Washington County, New York, and read,

William H. Thebo of Fort Edward committed suicide Saturday night by hanging himself in a barn adjoining the Thebo home. The last time the man was seen alive was Saturday afternoon, when after waiting on several customers at the grocery store which he conducted, he left the place.

No trace of him was found until his brother, Frank, went to the barn to feed the horses. Going to the hay loft in the darkness, he came in contact with the body.

Thebo, who was about twenty-five years old, had conducted the grocery store in partnership with his brother, and the reason given by his parents for his act was financial troubles.

Thebo had been acting strangely of late and his parents, fearing that something preyed on his mind, had been urging him to take a vacation.¹⁰

Benjamin Franklin Thebo, 83, first mayor of the Village of Fort Edward, died yesterday at the Collins Nursing Home, Fort Edward, after a long illness.

He was the last surviving member of the Idle Hour Club and was formerly in the grocery business, retiring sereral years ago. He had resided at 20 Bridge St.

Thebo was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Fort Edward Lodge, F.& A.M., and the George Satterlee Hose Co. of Fort Edward.

Surviving are his wife, Mary, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Brown of Husdon Falls.

The funeral will be tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. from the Wright Funeral Home, 19 East St., Fort Edward, and at 10 a.m. from St. James Church. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Fort Edward.¹⁰

She was a teacher for the Fort Edward Public School System for many years. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church of Fort Edward. Mrs. Brown is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Mary Bayne of Truckee, Cal., and Mrs. Blondene Bromall of Newark, Del.

There will be no calling hours.

Funeral servives will be condiucted at 3 p.m. Friday, at St. James Episcopal CHurch by the Rev. Arthur Clum, rector of the church.

Mrs. Thebo was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Rozelle of Glens Falls, here she ws born. During her forty uears' residence in Fort Edward she was very active in lodge and church circles. She was a charter member of the Fort Edward chapter, O.E.S.

Besides her husband, George W. Thebo, she is survived by one son, Walter P. Thebo of Hudson Falls; one daughter, Mrs. FLorence Dittman of Brooklyn; two nieces and one nephew.⁹

Mrs. Florence Dittman of 32 Baldwin Avenue, Fort Edward, widow of John J. Dittman, died yesterday at Glens Falls Hospital after a short illness.

Mrs. Dittman died three weeks to the day after the death of her husband, who for many years was a plumbing contrator in Fort Edward.

Mrs. Dittman was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, Fort Edward, and past president of the St. James Service League. She was also past president of the American Legion Auxiliary of Fort Edward, past matron of Fort Edward Chapter, OES, and a member of the State Advisory Board of the State Triangle, Daughters of the Eastern Star.

She is survivied by one aunt, Mrs. Howard P. Brown of Hudson Falls, and one uncle, B. Frank Bebo [sic - should be Thebo] of Fort Edward and several cousins.

A prayer sericvce will be held at the Wright Funeral Home, Fort Edward tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., and the funeral will be at 10 a.m. from St. James Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Fort Edward.²¹
