Birth* | William Woodley was born between 1853 and 1862 at Moretonhampstead, Devon, England. There are two William Woodleys who would seem to fit the combined information for this William after he moved to Orillia, Ontario, but I believe all the records I've assigned to this William are meant for him. It IS possible the other William (#3264) moved to Orilllia too, since I've lost track of him in Devon after 1881, but it seems less likely that only one was enumerated in each census than that this William's information was sometimes given incorrectlly. Newton Abbot birth registrations show him born by the fall of 1853, but in 1891 his age was given as 30 (birth c1861) and in 1901 his birthdate was given as Nov 8th or 9th, 1862 and his age as 38. I would not have thought this was the same person except for family knowledge that he emigrated to Canada and lived in Orillia. William does not appear on English census enumerations after 1881, the 1901 Ontario census gives his emigration year as 1883, and he is picked up in Orillia in 1891 and 1901. There is no obvious entry in the 1911 census, although his great-niece Edith Woodley Bailey remembered him (she was born in 1913) and thought he lived into the 1920s, never married or had children, and died in Orillia. He was indeed enumerated in Orillia in 1921, age 68 (birth year c1853), wtih an immigration date of 1887.6,1,2,3,4,5,7,8 |

Death* | Family recollection is that William Woodley died after 1920 at Orillia, Ontario, Canada. In the letter Elizabeth Stanleick Woodley wrote on 23 June 1921 to William Woodley and Mary Louisa Steele Woodley, announcing the death of Samuel Shears Woodley, she mentions "Uncle Bill", whom I believe was William Woodley, Samuel's brother. She states that Bill was ill and had no one to take care of him.9,10 |
