Obituary | His obituary was published 3 August 1942 and read: Arrangements are being completed today for the funeral of Victor Peters, 19, of 49 Brinkerhoff St., who drowned Saturday afternoon while canoeing near the New Jersey shore of the Delaware River, at Bushkill, Pa. Despite attempts of Peter's companion, William Geier, 37 Lexington Av., to save the youth, he failed to surface after diving from the canoe as it approached the shore. The body, bearing a wound on the head, was recovered by state troopers from Newton, at 11 a.m. yesterday. It is believed Peters struck a rock or some other submerged obstacle on the bottom of the river. It has not yet been determined whether drowning was the direct cause of his death. The youth's father declared last night his son was an average swimmer. He was six feet two inches tall. Peters, accompanied by Geier, three other youths and Thomas Carey, of Bergen Av., whose two sons were in the party, went to Bushkill Saturday morning. In the afternoon the group separated for various recreational activities, and Peters and Geier headed toward the New Jersey shore in the canoe. Peters was born in Jersey City and graduated from St. Aloysius Parochial School. He graduated wtih the June, 1941, Class at Lincoln High School. Since graduating, he was employed at the Western Electric, Kearny. The drowning victim's father, Bertram Peters, formerly a member of the composing room staff of The Jersey Journal, is now a compositor at the Jersey City Printing Co. He is a past presidenct of Jersey City Local No. 94, International Typographical Union. One of a family of 11 children, Peters is survived by his parents, Bertram and Helen Peters; six sisters, the Misses Mary, Margaret, Katherine, Patricia, Theresa and Edna Peters, and four brother, Private John Peters, who was en route to his home on a furlough from Fort Benning, Ga., when word of his brother's death was received at the Peters' home; James, William, and Stephen Peters.4 |

Obituary | His obituary was published and read in part: Striking in lightening-like rapidity, tragedy has visited the household of the Peters' family at 49 Brinkerhoff St. three times. This morning, a requiem mass was celebrated iun St. Patrick's Church, Bramhall Av., in memorial for Tech. 5/g James Francis Peters, who has been declared killed in action. The soldier had been reported as missing in action for more than a year. Peters, who would have celerated his 21st birthday this coming April 18, was a medical aid man, attached to an infantry unit, during the European Theater campaigns. A communication from the War Department, received by Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Peters, parents of the soldier, on March 14, stated in part that, "The records concerning your son show that he was attached to the infantry as a medical aid man. Late on the evening of March 13, 1945, northeast of Serrig, Germany, he answered a cry for help from a member of another company. After administering aid to this soldier, he told the platoon leader he would check for other casualties before returning to his own platoon." Continuign, the letter read, "...full consideration has recently been given to all available information bearing on the absence of yuor son, including all records, reports and circumstances. These have been carefully reviewed and considered. In view of the fact that 12 months have now expired without receipt of evidence to support a continued presumption of survival, the War Department must terminate such absence by a presumptive finding of death. Accordingly, an official finding of death has been recorded, as March 15, 1946 [sic]." Shortly following this letter, a second one was received fropm Maj. Gen. Edward F. Witsell, Adjutant General of the Army, saying "An official report has now been received, which states that Tech 5/g Peters was killed March 14, 1945, in Germany." A further report revealed that his body was buried in a United States Military Cemetery somewhere ihn France. Peters, inducted into the armed services on Aug 4, 1943, was sent to train at Camp Grant, Ill. Prior to that, he had tried enlisting in the navy three times, and in the Marine Corps once. Each time he was rejected b ecause of an eye defect. While training in Illinois, he was listed as a non cobatant due to the eye imperfection, but volunteered for duty with the infantry overseas. Moving from Camp Grant to Columbia, S.C., he was then prepared for transfer overseas. Following a year of training, he arrived in Europe. on 13 April 1946.6 |
Funeral | A memorial mass was held at St. Patrick's Church, Branhall Avenue, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, on 13 April 1946.6 |
Note* | On 14 June 1946, James Francis Peters was posthumously awarded the Silver Star with the following citation: For gallantry in action in the vicinity of Saarburg, Germany, March 13, 1945. While attacking strong enemy positions near Saarburg, Company C came under enemy small-arms and motar [sic] fire and suffered casualties. T/5 Peters, a medical aid man attached to Company C, repeatedly went forward under the intense hostile fire to administer medical aid to his wounded comrades. As company elements withdrew from the heavily shelled area to an alternate position, T/5 Peters was last seen helping a wounded rifleman to the rear. His courage under fire, strong initiative and commendable solicitude for the woulded relect the highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.5 |
