Death*Between June and August 1774, Dr. Stephen Tallman was ill with gout and old age. He died on 24 August 1774 at Pumpkin Point, Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey, at age 72. During his final illness he was attended by his two physician sons, Dr. Joseph Tallman and Dr. Christopher Tallman. Notes*He was a physician and farmer, and also a slave owner. He apparently was not a member of any church although he attended services sporadically at Shrewsbury. Stillwell describes the family this way:

The Tallman blood ran riotously. Through what ante-cedent strains it was derived, I can only conjecture, but there is ample proof that its fiery character appeared in six generations, commencing with Dr. Stephen Tallman.... They were unmoral and irreligious; ugly tempered and defiant of law and social restraint. In these respects they came dose to primitive man. They lived the life of landed squires owning many slaves and much land, and possessed much ready wealth They were well educated and contributed many members to the medical profession, and a goodly number of natural children to the world at large. During the Revolutionary War the family was split with many more of its members adhering to the Whig than to the Tory cause. In some instances it was brother against brother.6

Note*Stillwell's notes on her included the following: Mary Tallman, was good-looking, though not a handsome woman. She was of medium size, large boned, heavily built and possessed a very fair complexion. She was always very tender and good to her family. She was an eccentric woman, with an easily provoked, high temper and was considered by her slaves, a witch. Rosanna Livingston, a household slave, seemed to have come in for a share of her ill will, for on one occasion when she was setting the dinner table, her mistress threw a handful of knives and forks at her head, with such precision that Rosanna looked as if she were a female St. Sebastian, and the irate old lady held her to her work notwithstanding her suffering. This scene had a tragic ending, for the family were hardly seated at the dinner table, when Mrs. Tallman was stricken with apoplexy. She was carried to her bedroom, remained speechless and paralyzed and was attended by her husband for nine days when she died.
The remains lay at her residence for two days and the attendance at the funeral was large. The customary eight pallbearers, four bearing the remains one-half the way, and four the remaining portion of the way, carried the corpse, which was interred in the adjacent Tallman plot. Neither Dr. Tallman nor his wife Mary, were apparently members of any church, though they occasionally attended service at Shrewsbury.
Mary Tallman, the wife of Dr. Stephen Tallman, was living as late as 1774, when, with her husband, she joined in making the conveyance to her son James, Apr. 2, of that year; and if the assertion is correct that she died before her husband, it must have been between this date, Apr. 2, and Aug.24, 1774, when her husband Dr. Stephen Tallman, died. That she predeceased her husband rests entirely upon the doubtful testimony of John R. Livingston. That she died close to the time of her husband’s death is likely, as no tombstone marks her burial place, which is a matter for comment and not easily understood.6

Executors were his brothers Stephen, Joseph and John, and heirs were said brothers, plus his mother and his sisters Mary, Sarah, and Martha. In addition, he left legacies to Deborah, daughter of Elizabeth Wardell, and to Mary Crockson and the child with whom she was pregnant (or supposed to be pregnant...) His slave Jack was to be set free when he was 40.2 
(Witness) DeathHe and his brother Joseph attended their father, Dr. Stephen Tallman, during his final illness between June and August 1774 at Pumpkin Point, Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey.3,4 
NoteIn 1776, Dr. Christopher Tallman's lands were sold by the Committee because he was a Royalist.2 
NoteOn 16 August 1778, Christopher added a codicil to his will of 1772 and mentioned that he was "late of Shrewsbury" but now of the "narrows on Long Island."2 
Death*He died in the autumn of 1790.2 
Notes*Christopher studied medicine with his father, who established him on a farm at Tinton Falls, Monmouth County, New Jersey, where he practiced medicine and farmed.2
