This may be what the Tucker family history describes as follows: "During the Revolutionary war he suffered severe losses, not only from the deterioration of his lands, but also from the almost constant depredations of a numerous band of cowardly marauders (if so I may call them), who scoured the country in all directions, but more particularly along the sea-coast, entirely unmolested in their career. They cut down his grain and drove off his cattle, &c. and should be make any remonstrance, to such proceedings, they unceremoniously pointed to their fire-arms, with which they were well supplied, at the same time intimating to him that recourse would be had to them, should their outrageous demands be not complied with. Any person who has the least knowledge of those times, will at once know to whom allusion is here made. For all his losses, privations and troubles he never received the least remuneration.^20,22"

The following letter from Samuel to his son James is quoted by Henry Tucker in his history of the family: Shrowsbeury the 8 day ye 8 mo. 1798....Samuel Lives with us yet....Poor allen Lived in great Sparits all winter thinking the would Call for him this Spring went to Skool all winter and Larnt mazingly fast and got it, his master Says he thinks Parfit as far as the Rule of three and fellowship I exspeckt he will go to Skool this winter again. I think he will make a Prittey Capable hand at that Bisness, if the thinks the Cant put him in that Bisness next Spring I must Look our for a trade for him.²⁵

Will*

He left a will written on 27 August 1816 at Deal, Monmouth County, New Jersey, in which he left his estate to daughter Hannah and son Samuel (the other children having already received their share), and nominated sons Brittain and Samuel as executors. Witnessed by Nathan Woolley, William Martin, and John Throckmorton.^26,27

Death*

He died possibly of asthma on 2 November 1818 at Deal, Monmouth County, New Jersey, at age 83.^1,11,4,2

Notes*

Samuel Tucker was a Quaker and refused to bear arms, although he financially supported the Revolution. He was primarily a farmer. He and his wife, Elizabeth White, were ancestors of our family through two of their sons: Brittain and Tucker.²⁸

He was described by Stillwell as a man of integrity, agreeable manners and domestic virtues, but, like the rest of the Tallmans, he could swear beyond the average amount. He was an industrious worker and kept his slaves always busy.³

Obituary

His obituary was published in the New York Times on 16 September 1867 and read as follows:
On Saturday, the 7th inst., one of our oldest and most respected fellow-citizens died at his residence in Twenty-second-street, where he had been residing for the last quarter of a century.
Joseph Tucker was born in Eatontown, N. J., in 1788, and was consequently in the 80th year of his age. He came to this City in 1805, when he soon became engaged in business as a master-mason or builder. To his skill and ability in his profession the City is indebted for some of its most elegant and substantial public and private buildings. The Library of the College at Princeton, N. J., was also erected under his supervision.
Mr. Tucker was a veteran of the war of 1812, and also served fourteen years in the State militia. He was pf preculiarly modest and retiring character, but his sterling worth and integrity were so well appreciated by his fellow-townsmen that in 1831-2, much against his inclination, he was elected on the Old Whig ticket to fill the office of Alderman of the Eighth Ward, Walter Bowne, Esq., being Mayor; and again in 1834-5 he was elected to the same office, Cornelius W. Lawrence, Esq., being Mayor, the first Mayor elected by the people.
In 1836, the nomination to represent one of the districts of this City in Congress was unanimously tendered to the subject of this sketch, but for reasons of a purely private nature was declined.
In 1840 he was on the Whig Electoral Ticket, and assisted in the election of President Harrison. In 1842 he was eleted and took his seat as a member of the New-York State Assembly. Such is a brief account of a man who was universally respected and loved for his many vitrues. He an ardent supporter of the cause of religion, and contributed largely of his means and personal efforts toward the furtherance of various religious objects.
His reputation for strict honesty and inegrity was so remarkable that for a long time he was extensively and famliary known by the title of "Honest Joe Tucker."
He was for several years one of the Turstees of the old Greenwich Savings Bank.
So gradually pass away the substantial men of "ye olden time."⁵
