Name VariationAlthough the name Alice was used in all census records, I believe this is the same person shown as Marion Bailey in the New York City birth index for the relevant years. There is only one other birth shown for these parents, and that was for Charles Walter Bailey. There are two Alice Baileys listed duuring the 1900-1905 period, one on Feb 3, 1900 in Richmond County, one 11 Oct 1903 in Manhattan, but niether of these fit the lives of William and Mary, who lived in Brooklyn and whose daughter Alice was shown as being 3 years old at the time of the 1905 census.2,3
Birth*Alice Bailey was born on 3 February 1902 at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, probably in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.1,2,3
(with Parents) Census1905StateComUSShe appeared on the 1905 State Census of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York in the household of her parents, William Augustus Parmalee Bailey and Mary Boyle.1
Census1910FedUS*She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, living as a pupil at the Brooklyn Home for Blind, Crippled & Defective Children, enumerated 27 April 1910. It is likely she was moved to the Home after her father died in 1906.4
Census1915StateComUS*She appeared on the 1915 State Census of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, enumerated 1 June 1915. It is stated that she was living at 381 Clinton St., Brooklyn, NY, at the time of her admittance. This was her mother's address in 1909..5
Census1920FedUS*She appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of New York City, New York County, New York, living as a patient at the New York City Children's Hospital, enumerated 16 January 1920.6
Census1925StateComUS*She appeared on the 1925 State Census as an inmate at Letchworth Village, Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York, enumerated 1 June 1925.7
Census1930FedUS*She appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York, living as a patient at the Letchworth Village Home for Mental Defectives, enumerated 8 April 1930.8
Residence*It was indicated in the census of 1940 that on 1 April 1935 Alice lived at Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. This was where our Alice's mother and stepfather lived, but it is unlikely that Alice actually lived with them.9
Census1940FedUS*She appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Armenia, Dutchess County, New York, living as a patient at the Wassaic State School, enumerated 17 May 1940.9
Death*She died in March 1980 at age 78.10
Burial*She was buried on 18 March 1980.10
Note*Alice's existence was never mentioned in any of the family records passed down, even in the extensive genealogical notes left by her half-brother Howard Tucker Bailey, who lived in the same household in 1905 and was my grandfather.
