I think this was probably their son William. Ruth Cavagnaro says they had seven children: Margaret was the oldest and I don't remenber whether there were 4 boys and 3 girls or visa versa. Helen Chitty, who was shown in the 1920 and 1930 census enumerations as their child, was born about 3 years before their marriage and may have been adopted by the couple or a child from a previous marriage of Bella's who was adopted by James.^{2,3,10,4,5,15,16,6,17,7,8}

It appears the enumerator jumbled some of the many people living at this address, possibly catching them on the fly and sticking them in at the next available space. The Chittys' listing shows several additional people, some identified as children but who definitely belonged to other families in the building. There is also a man named Wiliam Rhall who is shown as a lodger, but may or may not have been lodging with the Chittys.⁷

Was described in 1918 as being of medium height and weight, with blue eyes and light brown hair. He completed four years of high school. Howard Louis Bailey made the following notes: A real nice guy. Could tell good stories, eg., in WWI in England, Jim met a Lord Chitty who told him how much money they had for the American Chittys, but Jim told him they needed it more and should keep it. Another version: His ship stopped in England during WWI and looked up Lord Chitty (reportedly a relative), who left all his money to the American family. When Jim saw the dire need for help for those in England he told them to give the money to the poor over there. It is also reported that the family over here was doubtful of the story but were united in thought that if it were true, Jim should have been tarred and feathered.^5,18,4

Howard Louis Bailey, who knew the family, stated that after Ralph fell backwards down a flight of stairs he signed himself into a hospital but apparently did not regain his former condition, and that he later committed suicide by putting his head in an oven while the family was asleep.^20,12,6,21

Howard Louis Bailey recalled that Ralph was with Adams Express, then started his own transportation business, possibly in the food industry. He was a very kind man who was particularly fond of Margaret Chitty Bailey and her cooking.²⁰

Family lore states that Charles and Bessie adopted Charles' grandson, William Barrow, and that Billy was told of his adoption after growing up. He stated that for him Aunt Bess was his real mother. Family contact with him was lost after Aunt Bess died. Whether he was Charles' grandson, son or other relative is not certain.^3,4
