However, Charles stated on his marriage certificate to Bessie that this was his first marriage. Billy was told of his adoption after growing up, and he stated that for him Aunt Bess was his real mother. Contact was lost after Aunt Bess died. There is family lore from another branch which states that Billy's birth father may have been a sailor named William Hickey or some variation thereof.1,4,5 |
